Milwaukee Bay One-Design Regatta: August 7-8, 2021

This past weekend Milwaukee Yacht Club hosted their annual multi-class regatta. The regatta is a great opportunity to get some sailing experience on Lake Michigan while enjoying the Milwaukee skyline.

Saturday racing began with a lighter breeze out of the North to Northeast. As the racing drew closer the wind also began to decrease. At the start of the race puffs were barely disturbing the water. The first race on Saturday was abandoned after the windward mark due to the threat of severe weather. That evening large storms passed through the city of Milwaukee. These storms included lighting and torrential rain.

The morning showed that many parts of the city had experienced flooding. Lightning damaged trees could be seen while driving down Lincoln Memorial Drive. The second day of racing saw the racing move from the waters of Lake Michigan to the alternate race site behind the Milwaukee Bay Breakwater. The regatta coordinators decided to move the racing to allow for more races to be run. Sailing out to the course sailors could see that the bay was full of debris from the river.

Racing was held just off the shore near Discovery World and the Art Museum. The wind began from an Easterly direction and then abruptly shifted during a race to the Southeast. This could be detected by the smell from the Milwaukee Metro Sewerage District.

The racing was made difficult by large weed patches that had emanated from the river. The weeds would catch on the boards and cause the boats to slow down or sideslip. As the racers got more experienced in the water it became clear that racers would need to strategize for the debris and weeds as well as the wind.

The event was high-lighted by the great trophies made by one of the racers. It was a great sailing opportunity and everyone in District 20 is looking forward to racing in Milwaukee next year.

Ephraim Yacht Club ILCA Dinghy/Laser Regatta July 25-26, 2021

This weekend many racers competed in Ephraim’s Annual Laser Regatta. This event was hosted by Ephraim Yacht Club. They provided racers with a great racing opportunity and an amazing Taco Bar. Ephraim Yacht Club has a large Laser/ILCA Dinghy fleet. Local sailors have the opportunity to check out club owned boats

The racing began on Saturday (July 24) afternoon. The race course was set near scenic Peninsula State Park. The wind began from a Western direction and as the afternoon progressed we saw the wind clock further and further South.

On Sunday July 25th, we saw extremely competitive racing. The race area was set further out into the bay. We also saw slightly more breeze and a congested starting line.
